Asbestos
- Asbestos is a natural silicate mineral with long, thin fibrous crystals. These fibres are invisible to the human eye. The Greeks called it the miracle mineral as it was soft, pliable and could withstand heat. It became known as a really good fire retardant and was used in many buildings in the UK from the late 1800s.
Burns
- There are many causes of burns which can affect the skin tissue, muscle, bones and blood vessels. These are; extreme heat, extreme cold, electricity, chemicals, light, radiation, and friction.

Driving
- Driving causes the largest amount of work-related traffic accidents in the UK and it is estimated that a third of all road traffic accidents involve somebody who is at work at the time. Many people need to drive as part of their work.

Repetitive Strain Injury
- Repetitive strain injury (RSI) affects thousands of people every year and prior to computers it was commonly known as writer's cramp. It is caused by repeated movements damaging tendons, nerves, muscles and other soft body tissues.
Risk Assessment
- A risk assessment is a part of a risk management process where an evaluation is made of the risks related to a situation. In the workplace a risk assessment process quantifies the harmful effect something can have on employees.
Special damages compensation
- Covers the costs you have incurred whilst claiming compensation. This could include loss of earnings, solicitor fees, medical treatment etc.
Statutory Sick Pay
- Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is paid to employees who are unable to work because of sickness or disability. It is paid by your employer for up to a maximum of 28 weeks. It is paid to all employees who are incapable for work and who satisfy the conditions for payment.
