As an employer you must carry out a risk assessment by law and it will help you focus on the risks that are important in the workplace. Often there are straightforward, cheap measures or procedures that will control the risks identified. The law requires an employer to protect employees as far as it is reasonably practical.

What is a risk assessment?

A risk assessment is a part of a risk management process where an evaluation is made of the risks related to a situation. In the workplace a risk assessment process quantifies the harmful effect something can have on employees.

How to carry out a risk assessment

  • 1. Identify the risks or hazards
  • 2. Think about who could be at risk and how
  • 3. Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
  • 4. Record the precautions and implement them by controlling them. Put in place protection from machinery, devise a safe system of working, implement health and safety training of all staff and provide protective clothing.
  • 5. Review, update and investigate incidents so you can identify hazards and prevent them happening again.

After an accident another risk assessment should also then be completed to reassess the workplace and how the work should be done and any dangers involved. An employer must keep a record of these assessments. An investigation as to how the accident happened is also required by law.
